Runners, Cyclists, Team Sport Athletes: Experience Relief with Arnica
Most athletes are familiar with injuries – that’s just what happens when you combine rigorous physical activity and competition. Even when there’s not a game on the line, occasional aches and pains are par for the course. When the body is pushed too hard or when new muscle groups are targeted, strains or mild swelling are sure to follow. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it.
When common injuries occur, homeopathic arnica can relieve pain, reduce swelling, and heal bruising. Here are a few examples of minor athletic injuries* that arnica can help with.
Minor Ankle Sprains
Minor ankle sprains are quite common during a variety of activities like running, soccer, dance, gymnastics, basketball, and tennis. If you happen to roll your ankle, taking arnica immediately after the injury will assist your body to reduce swelling and pain.
Muscles in the groin area are easily strained during exercise. Runners and field athletes like long jumpers are especially susceptible to pulling muscles in the groin area. If a minor groin pull happens to you, applying arnica gel to the affected area will provide some relief from the pain and tenderness.
Like the groin area, the hamstrings are also quite prone to minor injuries, as they are one of the most used muscles when we run, bike, jump, dance, squat, etc. When a hamstring is strained, using a topical arnica cream or gel will help heal some of the pain and swelling. Arnica can also be massaged into the affected area during massage therapy for further relief.
Pain in the muscles around and behind the shins is also expected following high-impact activities. This is especially true for sports performed on a hard surface like a court or on a cement pavement. As the legs make impact on the hard ground, the muscles can easily become strained and slightly swollen. Arnica can be taken before and after exercising on hard surfaces to help the body fight off discomfort and swelling.
Sports that include a lot of jumping, like volleyball and basketball, or quick pivoting actions, like tennis and soccer, can sometimes result in knee pain. When knee pain is due to minor injury or overexertion to the muscles in and around the knee, an application of arnica can help.
Wrist and Elbow Pain
For weightlifters, tennis players, pickleball players, golfers, and other athletes that use their arms and its joints constantly, arnica may be exactly what you need to address the minor pain you experience in those areas. Arnica is also well known for providing relief from pain due to arthritis.
Bruising from Injuries
When a minor fall happens, or you bump into a teammate or competitor in the heat of the moment, taking some arnica tablets or applying some arnica bruising ointment will help subsequent bumps and bruises heal faster, and also help relieve the pain and sensitivity of the bruise itself. As a tip, the sooner you use arnica after injury, the better it can work.
All Without Side Effects
One of the major perks of arnica is that unlike conventional over-the-counter pain relievers, homeopathic arnica does not have side effects or dangerous contraindications. When we talk to athletes about using arnica, one of the most popular comments is that they like using arnica because it helps their symptoms as effectively as other pain relievers but is safer to use and won’t harm their bodies.
*As indicated, arnica is an over-the-counter remedy that can be used for self-limiting conditions. If at any point you suspect an injury is not minor, or if you try arnica and symptoms persist, contact a medical professional.
